Bonney Memorial Library Expands Large Print Collection Thanks to ALA Grant for Accessibility Enhancements

Libraries play a vital role in connecting communities with knowledge and resources. At Bonney Memorial Library, we believe every visitor should have equal access to our collections and facilities. That is why we are excited to share news about the recent expansion of our Large Print Collection, made possible by a generous grant from the American Library Association (ALA). This grant, part of the Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities Initiative, has helped us improve accessibility and better serve all members of our community.

How the ALA Grant Supports Accessibility

The ALA’s initiative focuses on making libraries in small and rural communities more accessible. Bonney Memorial Library was fortunate to receive funding through this program, which has allowed us to address two key areas:

  • Repairing the A.D.A. automatic door opener

  • Purchasing new large print books for our collection

  • Providing Interactive sensory toys offer tactile, auditory, and visual stimulation, promoting engagement and sensory exploration while facilitating learning.

These improvements are more than just upgrades; they represent our commitment to inclusivity and removing barriers for patrons with disabilities or visual impairments.

Repairing the A.D.A. Automatic Door Opener

One of the first projects funded by the grant was the repair of our automatic door opener. This feature is essential for visitors who use wheelchairs, walkers, or have limited mobility. Before the repair, the door opener was unreliable, sometimes failing to activate or closing too quickly. This made entering the library difficult and discouraging for some patrons.

With the grant funds, we contracted a specialist to fix the door mechanism and ensure it meets current accessibility standards. Now, the door opens smoothly and stays open long enough for everyone to enter comfortably. This repair has already made a noticeable difference in how welcoming and accessible our library feels.

Expanding the Large Print Collection

The second major use of the grant was to expand our large print book collection. Large print books are crucial for readers with low vision or eye strain, providing an easier and more enjoyable reading experience. Before this expansion, our collection was limited, and popular titles were often checked out or unavailable.

Thanks to the grant, we purchased over 150 new large print books across various genres, including:

  • Fiction and non-fiction bestsellers

  • Mystery and thriller novels

  • Biographies and memoirs

  • Historical fiction

This diverse selection ensures that readers of all ages and interests can find something suited to their preferences. We also prioritized books by local authors and titles that reflect the community’s culture and history.

Why Accessibility Matters in Libraries

Accessibility is not just a legal requirement; it is a core value that shapes how libraries serve their communities. When libraries remove physical and informational barriers, they open doors to learning, entertainment, and connection for everyone.

For many people with disabilities, accessible features like automatic doors and large print books are not luxuries but necessities. Without these accommodations, they may face isolation or exclusion from public spaces. By investing in accessibility, Bonney Memorial Library helps ensure that all community members can enjoy the benefits of reading and lifelong learning.

Community Impact and Feedback

Since implementing these improvements, we have received positive feedback from patrons and staff alike. One longtime visitor shared how the repaired door made her feel more independent and confident visiting the library alone. Another patron expressed gratitude for the expanded large print collection, saying it allowed her to rediscover her love of reading after struggling with vision problems.

Our staff has also noticed an increase in the number of visitors using the large print section and more frequent requests for accessible services. These responses confirm that the grant has made a meaningful difference in our community.

Looking Ahead: Continuing Our Commitment

While the grant has enabled important upgrades, our work to improve accessibility is ongoing. Bonney Memorial Library plans to:

  • Regularly update and expand the large print collection

  • Explore additional accessibility tools such as audiobooks and screen readers

  • Provide staff training on assisting patrons with disabilities

  • Seek further funding opportunities to enhance library facilities

We encourage community members to share their ideas and needs so we can continue to grow as an inclusive space.

Expressing Our Gratitude

We extend heartfelt thanks to the American Library Association for their support through the Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities Initiative. This grant has empowered us to make tangible improvements that benefit all visitors.

We also thank our patrons for their ongoing encouragement and feedback. Your voices inspire us to keep working toward a library that welcomes everyone.
